Since Souk Eye is almost definitely about Murdoc, listening to it again after The Lost Chord hits different.

There’s a fair bit of Plastic Beach imagery in Souk Eye, i.e. ‘Why you rolling waves over me now,’ 'till you dive in.’ Then there’s the whole 'If loving you’s a felony now, then I’m a renegade, riding,’ line that hints back to Stylo if the picture of it in 2D’s journal, and the lyrics themselves are any indication.

But most importantly there’s:

'Come find me, Be forgiven.’

Even if Murdoc doesn’t truly deserve this forgiveness he finally got it. It was something mentioned back in Plastic Beach itself with the lines, 'I’ll wait to be forgiven. Maybe I never will. My star has left me. To take the bitter pill,’ from To Binge.

Humility, Fire Flies, Souk Eye, Désolé, Aries and The Lost Chord all mark important stages/aspects of 2D and Murdoc’s relationship, at least in some of my interpretations. And there’s even a few songs way back in Plastic Beach that hint at Murdoc’s feelings of guilt too, like the aforementioned To Binge.

The way I see it is, To Binge is Murdoc wishing he could be forgiven but knowing it’s unlikely to ever happen. Humility is 2D asking Murdoc to make amends. Souk Eye is 2Dwanting to forgive Murdoc. Désolé is Murdoc actually asking for forgiveness. And finallyThe Lost Chord is 2D forgiving Murdoc.

Even though Gorillaz lore is usually anything but coherent I really appreciate this gradual development of the characters in general and their relationships. Murdoc and 2D are at the forefront of this, but I think a fair bit of it applies to the band as a whole too. I really hope they don’t reverse all the progress they’ve made in future stuff because it’s cool to see the characters evolve.

Look I dont ship 2Doc but god dang I'm a sucker for forgiveness & mended friendships and Im totally backing this theory up
