📍 Here's why 🇲🇾 Malaysians always insist that Indonesians are Malay people, meanwhile 🇮🇩 Indonesians always reject that idea.
Because the way Indonesians and Malaysians see their peoples is really really different.
● In 🇲🇾 Malaysia, all Malaysians with Indonesian ancestry (Bugis/Buginese, Malay itself, Java, Banjar, Acheh, Minang etc.) are all classified as Malay people (or "Bangsa Melayu"). Meanwhile Chinese and Indians living there are classified differently. In Malaysia there are (mainly): 1. Malay nation/race (all Malaysians of Indonesian ethnicities are in this category) 2. Chinese nation/race (all Malaysians of Chinese ethnicities are in this category) 3. India/Tamil nation/race (all Malaysians of Mainly Tamil is in this category)
● Meanwhile in 🇮🇩 Indonesia, they have their own concept, Indonesia only has one single nation which is: 1. Indonesian nation (all people with Indonesian citizenship are in this category) 2. Indonesia does not separate its people into categories for the sake of unity and it works perfectly and it's successful. 3. What about Chinese Indonesians (in Indonesia they are called Tionghoa people)? The answer is the same, they are in Indonesian nation category.
This unified identity makes all Indonesians regardless their ethnic background feel as one people with one unifying language.
